Brad Lightcap is leaving OpenAI after eight years to start something new

Brad Lightcap, who spent eight years at OpenAI and four of them as chief operating officer, said on Tuesday that he is leaving to start something new. He did not say what it is.


“It is bittersweet to share that I’ll be moving on from OpenAI to start something new,” Lightcap wrote in a post on X, echoing an internal memo sent the same day.

“I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period. I’ll have more to share soon, but I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point.”

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 from Y Combinator, where he had worked with Sam Altman, and became COO in 2022.
