Attracted to Energy Efficiency? Nanomagnetic Breakthrough Could Deliver Greener Computing

A team of researchers from the US Department of Energy's (DOE's) Argonne National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Adolfo Ibáñez University has proven a geometric rule as to how teeny-tiny magnets thousands of times smaller than a grain of sand behave — and say it has the potential to deliver far more energy-efficient computing.

"What we have identified is a relationship between structure and function," explains Hanu Arava, lead author of the study and a materials scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory. "In our case, the structure is the geometric arrangement of the magnets with respect to each other, and the function is how energy moves through the system. We've shown that geometry alone can determine how energy moves through these magnetic systems and that insight gives us a new way to design computing devices."
