Attention AMD GPU Owners: A Driver Issue Is Breaking Cards with Zero RPM Feature
AMD graphics card owners running AMD's Adrenalin 26.5.1 driver (released on May 6) have noticed a bizarre bug with the Zero RPM feature, Tom's Hardware reports. When monitors wake from standby, the Zero RPM feature remains active, even as GPU usage rises and temperatures follow suit. This is causing GPUs to overheat, crash, and potentially even damage the hardware in hotter climates.
Zero RPM is a feature on some modern graphics cards, particularly third-party models, that keeps the GPU fans off when temperatures and load remain low. However, as the GPU is loaded by a game or other demanding application, the fans are supposed to spin up to prevent overheating. With this driver, when waking monitors from standby, Zero RPM is locked on, causing significant issues.
