Apple has officially unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12, mounting a direct challenge to screenless recovery trackers like Whoop. The updated wearable features an overhauled Health Sensing System powered by larger, highly efficient green optical sensors and the S11 silicon chip, enabling continuous heart rate tracking every five seconds—even outside dedicated workout modes.

Beyond continuous monitoring, the Series 12 dramatically expands heart rate variability (HRV) tracking, sampling data up to 24 times more frequently. The smartwatch separates these readings into Recovery HRV and daytime metrics to offer deeper physiological context. Feeding this data into an intelligent algorithm, Apple introduces a daily Readiness score (ranging from 0 to 10) that suggests whether users should push through intensive workouts or focus on active recovery.
