Apple Prototyped a Stubby Stylus for the Foldable iPhone, Then Shelved It
Apple reportedly created a shorter Apple Pencil for its first foldable iPhone (likely to be called the iPhone Ultra), but this variant of the brand's beloved stylus is unlikely to launch with or without the device.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple developed, tested, and considered selling a stylus exclusively for its foldable, but seems to have decided against selling it, at least for now. The prototype used a magnet to attach to the phone, as current Apple Pencils attach to the iPad, but Apple found the design didn't work well on a phone-sized foldable. And because the pencil needed to match the foldable's smaller size when closed, it was awkward to grip, making use uncomfortable.
Samsung already limits which S Pens work on which foldables for similar reasons, making Apple's pause understandable.
