High Cloud Infrastructure Costs Drive Subscription Strategy
While many on-device Apple Intelligence capabilities remain free, certain complex tasks rely on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Operating advanced server-side models involves significant computational power and energy costs. To manage server loads, Apple currently enforces daily limits on cloud-based AI requests.
Speaking to investors, Tim Cook suggested that power users who require extensive AI access may eventually have the option to upgrade their plans. He noted that the company envisions offering higher iCloud+ tiers, allowing customers to “buy up the stack” to receive increased usage allowances for server-dependent AI tools.
