Anything the Pope can do...now the Archbishop of Canterbury preaches her Anglican AI sermon, sadly lacking in turbulence
Late last month Pope Leo XIV issued his Magnifica Humanitas (Magnificent Humanity), a 42,000 words encyclical to Catholic bishops, on the subject of AI and humanity’s response. It was well-received in the main, with the exception of a few right-wing US politicos, and sparked a debate about his criticism of both Silicon Valley and Washington.
Now the head of the Anglican Church, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has made her own intervention in the AI debate in a speech in the UK Parliament. For the benefit of non-UK readers who may well wonder what the head of the church is doing speechifying in Parliament when one of the planks of UK democracy is the separation of Church and State, bishops have an automatic right to sit and vote in the upper house of Parliament, the House of Lords, in the role of ‘Lords Spiritual’.
