Anthropic Report Warns AI Is Enabling More Autonomous Cyberattacks

Artificial intelligence is moving beyond helping cybercriminals with individual tasks and is increasingly being used to coordinate large parts of an attack, according to a new threat intelligence report from Anthropic.

The AI company said its Threat Intelligence team identified and disrupted malicious operations involving its Claude models between December 2025 and August 2026. The activity covered cyber operations, surveillance, influence operations, scams and fraud, biological misuse, conventional weapons development, and illicit model distillation.

The report, Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026, is based on cases Anthropic said it investigated and disrupted. The company said the cases are not representative of all misuse of its models, but are among the most notable and novel activities it has identified.
