Anthropic Launches Faster, Safer, and Cheaper Claude Opus 5.5
On Tuesday, Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5, an AI model the company claims performs similarly to Claude Fable 5.1 but at a lower cost. The release purportedly offers Mythos-like cybersecurity and biology capabilities.
Anthropic says Claude Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. This is cheaper than Claude Opus 5, which costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. The company also says Opus 5.5 costs about 40% less to run on typical workloads—depending, of course, on how many steps, output tokens, or levels of inference work a given job requires—and cuts response times by nearly a third.
With production safeguards enabled, the new system sends most cybersecurity-related requests to Claude Opus 4.8. The company plans to give verified cybersecurity professionals broader access through an expanded Cyber Verification Program.
