Android 17 Takes Over App Tasks With Gemini Intelligence
Google has deepened Gemini's role across the Android OS, per Tuesday's The Android Show: I/O Edition. The update centers on Android 17, which is coming this summer, but this time, Gemini will exist closer to system controls and everyday tasks, meaning it won't exclusively work as a separate app or an overlay.
Android 17 will enable Gemini to handle more multi‑step actions and take on more app‑control jobs, allowing it to interact with supported services on a user's behalf within defined categories like food delivery and ridesharing. For example, you can ask Gemini to book you a ride home, and it opens a rideshare app, selects your saved address, and confirms the trip without you having to tap through each screen. These options build on existing Gemini‑powered tools already present on newer devices, including Circle to Search and various forms of image and text assistance.
