An AI Toy That Doesn’t Need the Cloud

AI-powered toys can carry on conversations, answer questions, and tell stories to entertain children in ways that were not possible just a few years ago. However, those features often come with a catch: the toy needs an internet connection. For something sitting in a child’s bedroom listening to everything around it, sending data to a remote server isn’t exactly ideal.

SuperModerno sees the value in these types of toys but wanted to fix their privacy problems. Toward that goal, they developed CantaStorie, a screen-free storytelling toy that runs its entire AI pipeline locally.

CantaStorie is built around an Arduino UNO Q, which handles computer vision, story generation, and speech synthesis without relying on cloud services. A camera mounted inside the toy’s single large eye lets it recognize objects placed in front of it. Show it something like a teddy bear, and that object becomes part of a custom story generated...
