AI's energy crisis (3/3) - does expansionist thinking in Michigan and Montana offer the way ahead?
Would you want an AI data center on your doorstep? It doesn’t make you a NIMBY - not in my backyard! - to find the prospect unappealing, which is a challenge recognized in an earlier article in this series by the UK’s National Grid provider.
But it’s agreed by everyone that the world does need more data centers. Elon Musk wants them to be put into orbit, but until that particular trillionaire’s fantasy becomes a practical mainstream reality, we’re rather stuck with having to base them on terra firma and that means, inevitably, an expansionist land-grab in which someone is going to lose out.
One option cited by National Grid’s management is to seek to find existing infrastructure and facilities, such as unused manufacturing plants or de-commissioned small nuclear power stations, and build out from the established base rather than start to dig up green field sites around the planet.
