AI Was Supposed to Be Our Assistant. What If We Become Its Burden Instead?
There is a version of the next fifty years that looks like a miracle. Cancers caught and reversed before a patient ever feels sick. Fusion reactors humming quietly, uncracked, delivering power nobody has to ration. Crop yields doubling in soil we'd already written off as exhausted. Poverty, the grinding, generational kind, treated less as an inevitability and more as a solved engineering problem, the way we once solved smallpox. None of this is science fiction anymore. It is, in outline, the plan. And for a while, it will feel like everything we hoped the AI technology would eventually deliver, finally arriving on schedule.
That's the part of this story we like to tell. It's also, if we're honest, the easy part.
