AI Guinea Pigs Really Made Me Question the Rest of Samsung Unpacked
I’ve never been repulsed by guinea pigs before, but Samsung’s Unpacked presentation changed that. About 15 minutes into the presentation, Samsung showed a video of two AI-generated guinea pigs doing human things, and my reaction was that of disgust. Not because I hate guinea pigs – I’m not a monster – but because those AI-generated critters and Samsung’s presentation represent what’s wrong with AI in today’s tech landscape.
It’s maddening that I can’t trust what I see and hear, and it’s a much bigger problem than just my personal frustration.
“As we start to worry about AI, it will likely, at least in the short term, undermine our trust default — that is, that we believe communication until we have some reason to disbelieve,” Jeff Hancock, founding director of the Stanford Social Media Lab, told NBC News earlier this year.
