The autonomous journey is usually described as a linear, logical progression from one level of maturity to the next. Yuan’s comments were based on a model that is widely employed in the automotive industry (the SAE six-level classification system).
In our book Autonomous, we took an analogous approach to explain how agentic and physical AI will progress from its initial capabilities in handling small and discrete tasks to future ones in taking on entire roles and functions. These models are better understood as maturity models, which have been standard in the IT world for decades. They’re useful, but they don’t describe the actual journey that organizations must take to proceed from one level of maturity to the next.
What we need with AI, even more than with previous transformation journeys, is a model that gives a more honest reflection of the journey itself. With apologies to Richard Feynman and...
