AI agents being evaluated by OpenAI escaped an isolated test environment and got into Hugging Face’s production infrastructure, though breaking out was never part of the task.

By OpenAI’s own account, models with no direct internet access exploited a zero-day in a package registry proxy, worked their way to a node that could reach the open internet, then used exposed credentials and further vulnerabilities to get at test solutions held in Hugging Face’s production database.

The models had a benchmark to beat and found their own route to the answers. OpenAI also says deployment safeguards were intentionally switched off for the evaluation, so this was not a typical enterprise rollout.
