9 in 10 Americans Have Been Targeted by a Scam or Cyberattack
Consumer Reports' 2026 Consumer Cyber Readiness Report says nine out of 10 Americans have faced at least one cyberattack attempt or online scam.
Based on a survey of 4,682 US adults from earlier this year, the report found that 91% of respondents had faced at least one scam or attack attempt. Thankfully, a majority of respondents hadn't actually been victimized by these attempts; around 17% said they lost money in a scam or cyberattack, with the average loss amounting to $235. One in 10 respondents lost their money for good, while the other 7% managed to recover what was stolen.
Email was the most common way people got scammed, with nearly a third of cases starting there. Text messages and messaging apps were next at 18%, followed by phone calls at 11% and social media at 10%. (Roughly one in five respondents couldn't remember where the scam started.)
