As more of our lives — including our most sensitive information — move online, and as the online threat landscape rapidly evolves, protecting yourself has taken on a new meaning. Some of the biggest modern-day threats come from behind a screen, and attackers need little more than a few stolen pieces of personal information to cause serious damage.
Identity theft can be just as, if not more, dangerous than having someone steal your wallet. An attacker with your stolen credentials, such as your Social Security number and other personal information, can access your accounts, make fraudulent purchases, open new credit cards or take out loans in your name.
Bad actors can even impersonate you to scam others or commit crimes under your identity. According to Norton, identity theft claims more victims than any other crime in America, with around 19 million people falling prey to it in 2024.
